Abstract

The study was carried out at Deir-ezzor-Syria during the growing
season of 2007-2008 ,to Know the possibility of growing buckwheat ,as a
new crop, under the environmental conditions of this governorate at different
plant and methods of sowing and to levels of nitrogen fertilization. Therefore
,the buckwheat cultivar "Ukraine" was selected. It was imported from
Ukraine where it is adapted for cultivation in west of Ukraine republic.
Mineral fertilizer was applied to the crop once at the sowing time at two rates
: N10P10 and N15P10 a.i/ donum .The crop was planted using broadcasting
method (40 Kg/ donum) and lines method with spacings of : 25,35 and 45 cm
between the lines .
Results showed possibility of growing buckwheat crop under the
environmental conditions of Deir-ezzor, where germination completed 7 days
after sowing, plants approached flowering stage, grains formed and then
reached final maturity stage. Also, the results showed that it is better to
follow lines method of sowing as compared to the broadcasting method. The
best arrangement of plant population was at the spacing of 25 cm between
lines. The highest total productivity was obtained by using the lines method
of sowing as compared to the broadcasting method. Whereas the highest
productivity per donum was by sowing at the spacing of 45 cm compared to
rest of the spacings .Plant productivity was the highest at spacing of 25 cm
compared to rest of the spacings, and weight of a thousand grains was the
highest by lines method of sowing as compared to the broadcasting method .
Also, effect of increasing the rate of nitrogenous fertilizer up to 15 Kg/
donum was obvious for increasing the productivity, particularly in the
treatment – 4, where the spacing was of 25 cm between lines. Weight of
thousand grains was the highest by sowing at 25 cm compared to 35 and 45
cm of spacings between lines.
